International airports, particularly those in the Middle East, have a heightened sense of awareness regarding the security strategies necessary for identifying and preventing terrorism. Airports in general also have concerns involving the flow of human traffic and cargo, as well as interaction with security staff and equipment, such as children playing on conveyor belts and luggage bottling up on the belts and causing delays.

Surveillance

cameras are relied upon to help identify unattended packages, suspicious behavior, and other unusual activity. As part of its solution to the conveyor belt problems, the customer had previously installed a laser-based camera with a motion detector. Monitoring was governed by a rules-based system and tied into the conveyor belt board. False positives using this system were too numerous and the belt was stopped too frequently to make this solution viable in the long term.

Solution

After AISight was awarded “Best Video Analytics Product” at a recent conference, the general manager of security systems for the airport contacted BRS to determine if AISight would provide a better solution than the video analytics solution used previously. Initially, AISight was set up to monitor feeds at terminals and on conveyor belts. Without any programming, AISight quickly learned that only certain types of objects travel on the belts and that they travel a certain direction. The application also learned where people stand, what they tend to carry, in which direction they move, and how they behave. Within days of deployment, AISight began alerting on unusual behavior, even identifying a package that had become lodged on the belt, which would have caused a bottleneck of passengers’ luggage.

Benefits

The system was successfully deployed and integrated with conveyor-belt switch systems. This application has proven that the system is extremely adaptable and can be used to solve specific problems. The customer values the fact that AISight is rapidly deployable, provides a greater return on investment when compared to its competitors, and has been easy to integrate with the existing security system. The AISight system is easily scalable, so the security contractor can easily scale the system to hundreds of cameras. Security personnel also have an understanding of the broader application and potential benefits of AISight in other airport security scenarios. [brslabs.com]
