Rohde & Schwarz SIT: New encryption solution closes market gap Print E-mail

At the CeBIT in Hanover, Germany, Rohde & Schwarz SIT presented  the new performance classes of network encryptors that provide maximum security also for heterogeneous network structures. The R&S SITLine ETH4G has closed a gap in the security solutions currently available on the market. For the first time, a single device is able to encrypt up to four 100 Mbit and 1 Gbit Ethernet connections. The R&S SITLine ETH10G completes the portfolio. It is the first Ethernet encryptor with R&SCrossMediaConnect, which provides the native support of both optical and electrical connections all in a single device.

The R&S SITLine ETH4G provides network administrators at companies and government authorities with more flexibility in planning their infrastructures. For the first time worldwide, existing 100 Mbit and 1 Gbit Ethernet infrastructures of up to four lines can be encrypted simultaneously in one device. Besides saving space in the server rack, line redundancy is now easier to achieve in this speed range. In case of increasing data traffic, the SITLine ETH4G offers investment security because its performance can be upgraded to 4x 10 Gbit Ethernet by means of a firmware update. This gives customers the opportunity to increase the encryption throughput to up to 40 Gbit/s. The R&S SITLine ETH10G rounds out the SITLine ETH product family. It is the only Ethernet encryptor that combines electrical as well as optical connections in just one device. The R&S CrossMediaConnect approach fits into heterogeneous structures in existing data centers and wide area networks (WAN). No matter which cabling system is used, the SITLine ETH10G is easily integrated. 

“These new products provide our customers with the opportunity to freely choose their cabling system and bandwidth. It does not matter if they use copper or fiber-optic cables, or 1 Gbit/s or 10 Gbit/s Ethernet. This allows our customers to decide on an infrastructure based on their business requirements without having to compromise on security,” explains Product Manager Stephan Lehmann, who is responsible for the SITLine family at Rohde & Schwarz SIT.  The devices of the SITLine ETH family are based on an innovative platform architecture from Rohde & Schwarz SIT that has been optimized for data center applications. Wear-and-tear parts, such as fans, power supplies and batteries, have a redundant design. This enables customers to exchange these parts even when the Ethernet encryptors are in operating mode. The platform architecture relies on state-of-the-art electronic components. They not only reduce power consumption but also have the lowest total cost of ownership (TCO) per gigabit for OSI layer 2 encryptors. The SITLine encryptors are government-approved by the German Federal Office for Information Security for up to the German restricted (VS-NfD) and NATO RESTRICTED classification levels.

Solutions for smart grids and tap-proof telephone calls
Unauthorized access to servers and data lines is not the only thing that poses a security threat for company data. Unprotected telephone calls also represent a security risk. With regard to voice encryption for commercial smartphones, Rohde & Schwarz SIT is internationally successful with the TopSec Mobile crypto headset. In addition, the TopSec Office Gateway allows field employees to make encrypted phone calls to all internal fixed lines. The new app for the Windows Phone operating system adds to the product range. It was celebrating its world premiere at this year’s CeBIT.
In order to safeguard smart grids, effective shielding of production site networks is necessary. The R&S SITGate Next Generation Firewall provides public utility companies and energy suppliers with an excellent means of protecting their smart grids. As an additional firewall, the SITGate monitors and filters the data streams at the internal perimeter between the company’s office and process control networks. The highlight of the firewall is the smart grid protocol decoder for the IEC-60870-5-104 protocol, which is used in energy control networks. The SITGate provides absolute control over data streams in telecontrol networks. For instance, the device ensures that distributed field elements can only send test values and status information but not control commands or malware to other network elements or control centers.
